Last night the Military Long Drive Championship was held in Mesquite Nevada. The winner was Ryan Hixon with a drive of 387 yards. This was Ryans fourth consecutive year as the militaries champion long driver. Congratulations Ryan. While the competition for the long drive is the main event. Art Sellinger of the Long Drivers Association puts on a spectacular program honoring our Armed Forces personnel. This is the third year in a row that Art has paid tribute to the military. This years main attraction once again were the wounded military people that have so honorably protected the American people over seas risking life and limb for freedom. There was a parachute jumper that landed right on the tee box to the delight of the entire crowd.
Last weekend we took a drive down to see the new Hoover Dam Bridge. It is amazing! You may have seen our earlier blog post about the Hoover Dam Bridge. This is the second tallest bridge in the US.
We had to battle the crowds a bit but we had a great time. It took about 1 hour and 20 minutes from Mesquite NV for us to drive to the to the loading area to see the Hoover Dam Bridge. We took highway 169 through Logandale and Overton and then followed Lake Mead around instead of going on I-15 into Las Vegas and then over to Lake Mead.
Due to it being the grand opening they were not yet allowing cars to drive across the bridge. We had to park at one of the marinas and then they bused everyone up to the bridge. We laughed when they had to check our bags for parachutes! We had a good time visiting on the bus. They bused us to the far side of the bridge (Arizona side) and then let us out. We then walked across Hover Dam Bridge to the other side.
Chris Schaeffel and I (Brandon Park) were given the opportunity to go for a plane ride over Mesquite Nevada from Kent one of our happy home owners that owns a fun, sporty little plane that he made himself.
We met Kent at the Mesquite Municipal Airport. His plane as you can see only fits the pilot and one passenger. The plane says “experimental” on it. When Chris asked if it was safe… Kent laughed and said the exceeds FAA standards by 2 to 3 times what they require as minimum. I asked if he had owned many planes and he said, “only 18.” Kent then added that this was his most responsive plane he had ever owned. He then gave us the safety talk and and told us we were going to love the views over Mesquite Nevada.

Can you believe a year has gone by already! Yes, it’s time for the World Long Drive Competition.
This year they have extended it and are running another qualifier prior to the event. The qualifier starts October 27 and goes through October 31. We then slide right on in to the World Long Drive Competition, which goes from November 1 and wraps up on November 5. They will once again have the Military Event on Wednesday evening, November 3. I’m not quite sure of the time, so watch our local event calendar from the Chamber. [click to continue…]
